Understanding Gallstones
Gallstones are hardened deposits that form inside the gallbladder, a small organ beneath the liver that stores bile.

Why Gallstones Form

Several factors influence gallstone formation: diet, liver health, bile composition, gallbladder movement and the body’s ability to process fats and toxins (because of diet and liver health).
Under healthy conditions, bile is fluid, constantly renewed, excreted — and used to detox toxins from the liver.
But when bile becomes thick or “toxic,” it can stagnate and form crystals. Researchers know that when bile acids — especially the more hydrophobic (fat-loving) types — accumulate, they can irritate and even damage the gallbladder lining, slowing its ability to contract and release bile efficiently.

(I used this method for years, with the addition of digestive bitters, to keep bile moving.)
But, bile chemistry isn’t just about movement. Studies show that the composition of bile — its cholesterol levels, bile salts and phospholipids — its overall balance — is what truly determines gallstone risk.
Overeating fat can make bile more concentrated with cholesterol, increasing the likelihood of crystallization.
Additionally, because bile contains toxins, moving more of it through the system means recirculating those toxins.
This can even perpetuate leaky gut, because bile is so toxic it can eat through digestive lining (this is what I think happened to me).
Bile Recycling and the Need to Detox Bile Naturally
Most bile acids don’t leave the body after digestion. Up to 95 percent are reabsorbed in the intestines and sent back to the liver in what’s called the enterohepatic circulation.
If bile becomes loaded with heavy metals or other fat-soluble toxins, those substances can circulate repeatedly — taxing the liver and gallbladder over time (and damaging other parts of the body).
