This article shares How to Improve Regularity & Consistency of Poops with Zeolite!
If you want to eliminate constipation, have better looking poops, to improve the consistency of them, and/or make sure they are completely out, this post shares a truly amazing supplement to help with that: powdered zeolite (highest grade clinoptilolite zeolite). The huge double bonus of this supplement is that it’s an incredible detoxification agent.
In fact, the primary role of zeolite for humans is detoxing. The side benefit of taking it is: Improved bowel movements.
So while you may have found this article to improve your poops, what you’re finding is the opportunity for whole body improvement.
I think of zeolite as the lazy man’s detox, because just taking it (as long as the dose is correct and it’s pure, which I discuss below) gives your body the opportunity for significant short and long term improvement.
Zeolite is for almost everyone — meaning, it’s very gentle and dosing is individualized for each person. More or less may be used according to each body’s needs (discussed below).
What is zeolite
Zeolite is a mineral, found in nature, with a cage-like structure that attracts, and traps, toxins found in the gut. It’s described as a detoxifying and anti-inflammatory agent.
Zeolite binds with toxic, positively charged, elements in the gut and helps remove them from the body before they have a chance to wreak havoc — including slowing bowel movements.
(Examples of toxins that zeolite traps include: heavy metals, ammonia, mycotoxins and many environmental pollutants.)
In one study on IBS patients, zeolite use for 8 weeks resulted in 84% of the patients reporting significant improvements in their bowel movements and the texture of their poops (using the Bristol Stool Chart, with types 3 and 4 being considered ideal).
The study shares, “In patients with initially “too hard” stools, the stool consistency (Bristol score) started to normalise after 4 weeks and improved further after 8 weeks … In patients with initially “too soft” stools, the stool consistency (Bristol score) tended towards “about right” after 4 weeks and improved further after 8 weeks…”.
Why does zeolite help with constipation and better poops
Zeolite helps improve poop texture and regularity because:
- It grabs hold of toxins that cause gut dysbiosis.
- Heavy metals cause bowel irregularity. Mycotoxins create all kinds of GI damage resulting in compromised BMs, ranging from diarrhea to constipation. Environmental pollutants trigger IBS and GI diseases.
- Zeolite frees up nutrients, to balance the GI ecosystem.
- Minerals like magnesium and potassium are freed up to create a healthy colon ecosystem. (These electrolytes play a role in maintaining the colon’s fluid balance, which is important for healthy bowel function.)
If constipation occurs while taking high quality zeolite, it is an indicator of not taking a high enough dose. I’ll explain this dosing paradox more in just a moment.
But in short, a potential “detox stress” can occur from too low of a zeolite dose.
Taking too little zeolite is more likely to cause constipation than taking too much.
How much zeolite to take — dosing
Quoted from Jeff Hoyt who first understood the proper dosing of high-quality zeolite, “There is really no way to know the exact dose that would be ideal for each individual, but … doses ranging from 5 grams to 30 grams, taken all at once seem to work well. The general rule is to start with a single dose of 10 grams per day. If a headache or other detox symptoms occurs it is recommended to double the dose.”
Why more zeolite is better
The reason to take more zeolite is: The higher dose of zeolite sops up all of the toxic elements in circulation and provides extra zeolite particles to trap additional toxins released during the detox process.
The 10g dose is for a 150 pound person and can be adjusted based on weight or toxicity symptoms. (A healthy person won’t need as high of a dose for as long.)
Regarding symptoms and dosing, if you experience a detox reaction, take more, not less (up to 30g or more, taken all at once).
He goes into a lot more detail about why a higher dose is better here, and includes the reminder: Use only the highest quality zeolite, or the same principles do not necessarily apply.
–> This zeolite brand is the one I take and recommended by my doctor who advocates for this dosing approach.
(Note: If you are doing an active Low vitamin A Diet liver detox, your dosing will likely be higher because you’re dumping more toxins. Feel free to ask in the Comments below if this applies to you.)
Caution: Zeolite is not recommended for pregnant or nursing woman, simply because no testing has been done to ensure its safety in these scenarios.
More details on dosing zeolite
Hoyt continues and clarifies, “It is important to note that the dose theory is not for a cumulative intake of zeolite throughout the day. It is for one dose of zeolite. Taking small amounts of zeolite throughout the day will not provide the same results as taking one large dose …
What to do if you started with too low of a dose and you are experiencing headaches or other detox reactions:
You could take another dose right away and see if that helps. It may or may not because the redistribution of metals and toxic elements is already occurring.
Stop taking the product and let your body reset. Once it is back in balance start again except this time with a higher dose.”
Regularity & Consistency of Poops with Zeolite: When to take zeolite
My doctor suggests taking zeolite before bed, or 30 minutes after a meal (after dinner is best).
Our bodies detox best while we’re sleeping.
Zeolite helps to heal the gut
Even without the exact correct dosing, testing shows zeolite to improve intestinal wall integrity (leaky gut) in just 12 weeks. It shows a reduction in gut inflammation (including pain and bloating), a positive influence on the gut microbiome and better nutrient uptake!
Regarding bowel movement texture, one study concluded, “The intake over 8 weeks improved the patients’ stool consistencies (diarrheic or too hard) towards normal.”
I find myself asking: Where has zeolite been my whole life?
I am once again so grateful that I finally found the right diet and doctor to heal my body — which led me to find this high quality zeolite and dosing insights.
Healing leaky gut, improving bowel movements and detoxing has never been more accessible than it is with pure clinoptilolite zeolite. (Find it here.)
Terri says
Isn’t there a problem with heavy metals in zeolite thank you Terri
Megan says
Hi Terri, good question, and it’s a common question. There are two parts to the answer. Firstly, Clinoptilolite zeolite is an aluminosilicate, meaning it contains aluminum in its structure. However, this aluminum is tightly bound within the crystal lattice and is not free to be absorbed by the body. According to expert Karl Hecht, whether aluminum can be released depends on the silica content of the zeolite, and with clinoptilolite’s high silica content, aluminum cannot detach. This is why clinoptilolite is used in the highest quality zeolite supplements and why I link to a trustworthy product — it is stable and does not release aluminum. Other zeolites, with lower silica content, break down more easily and may release aluminum. The clinoptilolite zeolite I link to has an exceptionally high silica content, making it even more stable. Perhaps most helpful, several test reports show reduction in aluminum and all heavy metal levels after consuming clinoptilolite zeolite. The second part of the answer is that zeolite prefers the most nefarious metals. So if in your body it picks up silver for example, but then it comes across lead, it will release the silver to pick up the lead. This is why the dosage paradox is so important. We need to take enough zeolite to pick up all heavy metals present (not that nanoparticle silver is bad for the body, but we want the zeolite to grab all problematic heavy metals like copper, lead, cadmium, arsenic etc). It will only drop a metal it has picked up if it comes across a worse one, based on the positive ions and magnetism. We want to take the maximum dose to feel symptom free each dose so that we are providing enough of the cage-like structure to grab all heavy metals present.

Hi Megan, can we get our vitamin A levels checked to see if we have too much and are at that toxicity level?
Megan says
Hi Cara, there are two parts to the answer: One is that we can have the vitamin A levels in our blood checked, but it’s increasingly being revealed that vitamin A is a toxin and not a vitamin, and we are seeing that the body stores it to protect us from it, first in the liver, and then when the liver is full, in adipose tissue. So a person can show toxicity in their blood, but they can also have almost none in their blood, and a liver and fat full of it. And there’s no way to test the liver content without a biopsy, which is a very invasive surgery no one does unless it’s a life and death situation. The second part of the answer is that most Americans are vitamin A toxic, and while they don’t know it now, it shows up in various symptoms and diseases over time. One of the best ways to see this is to start purposely detoxing vitamin A by removing it (knowledgeably, with a few steps first, like taking activated charcoal each day, as a binder) from the diet. This raises one’s serum levels (which can be seen in blood testing), as it starts actively detoxing. The body removes vitamin A from the liver on the same pathway that it removes glyphosate, alcohol and other toxins, interestingly. Most Americans are toxic because of modern fortifications or dietary choices that we didn’t even know were harmful, including topical applications and multivitamins. By the way, medical lab ranges are still incorrect in what vitamin A levels should be, so an average blood test may show vitamin A levels in range for fine health, but they are not accurate. We should not have vitamin A in our blood, or levels should be very low. Vitamin A is used as a chemical peeler in products like Accutane (used for acne). No one should have a chemical peeler in their blood … It’s a hot and long topic, as you can see.

Thank you Megan, that helps. It reminds me of oxalate and how a lot of medical practitioners are unaware of the harm it causes in all areas of the body, not just in the kidneys. The numbers that come back on oxalate levels through the OAT test can come up normal but are not read accurately. Also, you don’t know your having issues in these areas until you start weaning off of the harmful foods and the detox symptoms come along with feeling better. Thanks to you, I am already doing the activated charcoal at night. Still praying about trying the diet, I’ve been so restricted for so long, it’s hard to start another restrictive diet. Thank you for all your help! Cara

So happy to help, Cara! 🙂

Hi Megan, have you seen a COA on this zeolite by any chance? I can tell I would really benefit from this (although nursing currently so might need to wait a bit), but I feel like this is the kind of product that could potentially come up high in heavy metals if tested, somewhat like clay always does.
Megan says
Hi Skye, no COA on this product. I contacted the company, and this is their reasoning and answer: “Zeolite is aluminosilicate mineral. Our natural zeolite clinoptilolite silica to aluminum ratio is about 7:1, that is very high. In zeolites, Al and Si are indeed bonded to oxygen atoms, creating a stable structure.
If metals would be cleaned out of the zeolite (de-balanced) then zeolite would bind iron or other metals from the body which can be harmful. This is why we don`t recommend using Zeolite, where heavy metals were removed after mining. More information about our zeolites: Our zeolite is 100% natural. 100% natural are never pharmaceutical grade-(nothing added or removed, except water). This zeolite is activated with high temperature. The activation-process: First the wet zeolite will be grained in about 25-160mm. Then it will be heated at temperatures around 450 degree Celsius/ 723 K / 842 degree F for several hours to eliminate the crystalline water inside the zeolite-structure. After that it will be customized, grained in different sizes and micronized. Activation increases the Zeolites capability for detox. All natural minerals even pharmaceutical grade involve some traces of heavy metals. But activated zeolite could release some heavy metals only if heated above 400°C (752ºF). With normal application that is not possible. Just the opposite, Zeolite binds heavy metals as Zeolite particles are negatively charged nano-cages. Each tiny cage has a negative charge to attract positively charged heavy metals into those cages.” My doctor agrees with this logic. I’m looking forward to my lab results, that include all heavy metals including copper, after I’ve been taking the high doses for 6 months to a year. Yes, I think almost everyone would benefit from taking high quality zeolite clinoptilolite. I’ll try to circle back with my labs after several months.

Hi Megan,
I am also on the LYL program and I was wondering if the zeolite is triggering a bile dump or if it acts more like the AC ?
I personnaly dont take AC because I am a constipation type. I do take a bit of beans for the régularity. Thanks for your great article, i will give the zeolite a try but à bit afraid of taking so much as i am a very sensitive person.
Thanks for sharing your best tips and do a better world.
Megan says
Hi Genevieve, happy to help, and nice to connect. For active patients of Dr. Smith’s who go to Office Hours, he always says: Increase your dose. With any symptoms, definitely including constipation, he says it means you’re not taking enough. This happened to me, and you really have to trust him. I increased, and sure enough, my bowel movements got better, not worse. You can also ask in LYL if it takes a while to find the right dose, or if you’re feeling worried and need more voices of knowledge supporting you; I am at a really really high dose. But Dr. Smith has other patients at even higher doses than me, and he always says to increase if any symptom is present. (To give you an idea, I take 180g nightly, because I am actively detoxing huge amounts of copper.) On the other hand, you might be fine with a lower dose and not need as much. Either way, Dr. Smith would say to go off of your symptoms. It is not like AC in this way. It will not cause constipation to take more; but you might need to take more to get your bowels moving. Yes, keep on with the beans, too. Our bodies still want the fiber, as well. I’m also here if you want support here as you figure it out. 🙂 And you can use the Search bar in LYL to see prior conversations on it; just be sure to read them all to get the most accurate information and not speculation. Best!!

I’m guessing that solid zeolite acts differently than zeolite spray? Do you take it dissolved in water? Is this a safe or better to use than herbs like cascara segrada?
Megan says
Hi Dorothy, yes, definitely safer and better than any herbs, including cascara segrada. I am a long time fan of high quality zeolite spray, but the benefit of zeolite powder is that the high dose is affordable, and my doctor prefers it to nano. The nice thing about zeolite powder, also, is that as it collects all of the toxins in the body that it first accesses, the body then releases more and more of what it’s holding. It detoxes when it can (the body is smart), so even from the brain, when the time comes. I do like/prefer TRS nano zeolite for acute uses, like immediate relief from toxic exposure or getting into the brain faster when that’s needed (not to mention sunburns, canker sores, stings etc.
Leslie says
Is this a permanent daily detox supplement or is there a time limit that we should be taking it?
Megan says
Hi Leslie, yes, zeolite can be taken long term, and I plan to, but dosage can eventually go down for some people, if the bulk of detoxing happens. Then, the zeolite would help with daily and short term exposures, as well as possibly anything else the cells and tissues let go of over time.
Leslie says
One more question. Do you recommend a binder to go along with this too?
Megan says
Hi Leslie, Dr. Smith likes his clients and patients to use activated charcoal as well. I take about 1000 mg of AC daily, usually at night before bed to grab that nighttime bile dump that happens for most people at about 3am.
