How to Detox the Toxins in Joints to reduce joint pain: When we think about joint pain, we often think about inflammation — and sometimes the use of an anti-inflammatory diet (like eliminating nightshades) to reduce the pain and bring healing. In other cases, people use NSAIDs, corticosteroids by injection, physical therapy or get surgery to relieve joint pain.
This post looks at joint pain from this angle: What toxins are stored in the joints? And, what happens when we detox those toxins?
Every single health issue has a cause. When we truly understand what that cause is, and sometimes it’s very simple, we can address it, and reduce symptoms, sometimes completely, over time.
This post does not attempt to address all joint pain, for example injury or tumor-related joint pain. It also remains to be seen if zeolite can help with calcification, long term; it does seem likely, as it helps to balance minerals.
Toxins our bodies store in joints
An increasing body of research indicates that joint pain is frequently associated with, and in many cases caused by, the accumulation of heavy metals in joint tissues.
Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis have been linked to this phenomenon.
As one example, mercury has been shown to induce autoimmune and inflammatory responses, as well as genetic and epigenetic alterations, all of which have been implicated in the pathogenesis of joint and connective tissue disorders.
Some of us have no idea where we were exposed, but the heavy metals are there in most of us.
The same way the body stores toxins in the liver, fat cells and other tissues, to protect us from them, it seems to deposit certain heavy metals in joints — leading to inflammation and discomfort. (Perhaps the pain is a kindness that tells us we need to detox [or else]!)
Here’s a breakdown of substances that can accumulate in and around joints:
1. Environmental Toxins:
- Heavy metals: Lead, aluminum, cadmium and mercury, among other heavy metals, can accumulate in joint tissues, potentially contributing to inflammation and other health problems.
- Note: See section below about taking zeolite to usher heavy metals from the body!
- Pollutants: Exposure to air pollution, pesticides and other environmental pollutants may lead to their accumulation in the body, including joint tissues, potentially contributing to inflammation.
- Yes, zeolite removes these pollutants, too.
2. Inflammatory Substances:
- Cytokines: These proteins are released during inflammation and can accumulate in inflamed joint tissues, contributing to pain and swelling.
- Note: An anti-inflammatory diet and zeolite both help with this!
- Advanced glycation end products (AGEs): Formed when sugar molecules bind to proteins or fats, AGEs can contribute to inflammation and joint damage.
- Note: Reduce sugar intake and eating refined carbs to address this cause.
3. Other substances:
- Interstitial fluid waste: Cellular debris and metabolic byproducts can accumulate in poorly circulated areas around the joints.
- Note: See section below about simple practices to increase circulation.
4. Metabolic Waste Products:
- Uric acid: High levels of uric acid can lead to the formation of urate crystals in the joints, causing gout.
- Note: Be sure to avoid organ meats, high in uric acid.
- Lactic acid: Produced during exercise, lactic acid can build up in muscles and joints, contributing to soreness and stiffness.
- Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystals: These crystals can deposit in joint cartilage and surrounding tissues, leading to a condition called pseudogout or calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD).
- Note: An anti-inflammatory diet is the best way to prevent and repair, balancing the body.
While these substances can accumulate in and around joints, the body has natural detoxification systems, including the liver and kidneys, that work to filter and eliminate toxins.
Factors like diet, supplements and exercise impact the body’s ability to manage and eliminate these substances.
How to detox the toxins in joints to reduce joint pain
Joint pain often serves as an indicator of accumulated substances within the body.
The best remedy is to:
- add zeolite to one’s supplement routine
- Read this post to choose which of the three best zeolite products is ideal for you. This article also shares how to dose zeolite (how much to take).
- This is the most powerful and effective zeolite. Use code MEGANSTEVENS for 10% off.
- Or this zeolite is also excellent for a lower dose long term process (less financial investment, but it takes longer).
- Read this post to choose which of the three best zeolite products is ideal for you. This article also shares how to dose zeolite (how much to take).
- eliminate high sources of heavy metals (such as a high copper diet)
- Learn more about a lower copper diet here.
- reduce dietary vitamin A (which increases uric acid levels) and eliminate vitamin A in all supplements, including fish oil
- Learn more about reducing vitamin A and why here.
- begin or renew an anti-inflammatory diet
- Choose a looser/easier Anti-Inflammatory Diet (like this), or a stricter Low Copper, Low Vitamin A Diet for deeper liver and overall healing.
Zeolite, diet and lymph to remove heavy metals from joints
Zeolites are known for their ability to bind to heavy metals and other toxins, potentially helping to reduce the body’s overall burden of these substances. While it may seem indirect, in reality, the more heavy metals zeolite removes from easy to reach locations, the more the body frees up deposited heavy metals from joints and other deeper storage locations.
In fact, many people report a noticeable reduction in joint pain shortly after initiating zeolite supplementation. Conversely, insufficient dosing may lead to a temporary increase in discomfort. (Refer to the dosing guidelines here to understand and ensure an adequate starting dose.)
Ways zeolite works to improve joint pain
- Zeolite has demonstrated promising potential in promoting cartilage regeneration. It enhances the synthesis of proteoglycans—essential constituents of healthy cartilage—thereby supporting the repair and reconstruction of damaged joint tissues.
- In arthritic rats, zeolite/vitamin B12 nanocomposites have been shown to reduce markers of inflammation.
- Zeolite contains silicon, which has been linked to bone synthesis and can promote osteogenesis (bone formation).
- For histamine related joint pain, studies suggest that zeolite can help reduce inflammation by binding to histamine.
Other factors: an anti-inflammatory diet and exercise
Detoxification is primarily managed by organs like the liver and kidneys, which is why diet is so important.
Increase circulation and lymph flow
Daily practices like The Big 6 improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, which may help release toxins from joints. (I do this daily and love it.)
Conclusion
How to detox the toxins in joints to reduce joint pain includes detoxing those toxins! And taking in fewer as well.
Most people attribute joint pain to arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, due to its common association with aging and wear and tear on the joints. This vague diagnosis does not account for young people who have joint pain, or that joints are often times not worn down. Even infections and autoimmune disease-related joint pain have more specific causes.
By addressing the intake of heavy metals, diet, exercise and taking zeolite, we begin the process of taking in fewer heavy metals and detoxing the ones we’ve accumulated.

Hi Megan,
Thank you for sharing this. I’ve seen, in a seed catalog, a variety of WHITE tomatoes. Would these be okay to eat, in season, on a low vA / anti-inflammatory diet? Thanks!
Megan says
Hi Sally, I’m afraid not. Others have asked this good question, too, so sad. I used to miss them, too, the beautiful heirloom juicy tomatoes of summer. I like to think when we’re all done detoxing, we’ll be able to enjoy this foods again occasionally. I do believe that to be true. The only good alternative is actually peeled white peaches. I know it’s not the same, but you can use them oftentimes in place of tomatoes in a variety of recipes, and if they’re really good summer peaches, it’s quite lovely.
