For this recipe, I use a natural form of cane sugar.
You may also use plain white sugar, but I’ve chosen the more natural, less refined version of sugar for a few reasons:
- It has a richer, more complex flavor.
- I choose organic cane sugar, so this means our soil and health are better preserved, as the farmers avoid herbicides, pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
- In general, less refined more natural foods are better: fewer chemicals, residues, and support of sustainable practices, instead of heavy factory footprints.
- Cane sugar has a slightly lower glycemic index, making it slightly better for blood sugar levels.
Happily, despite being natural and having a tiny bit of molasses left in it, cane sugar is still plenty light enough to color with beet powder, for pretty decorating needs!
Pink Sugar with Beet Powder has just two ingredients:
- cane sugar — Here’s a good one with a better price for a bulk bag. (Use this instead of white sugar for any baking needs.)
- beet powder — Here’s the best one.
VARIATION: How to make this recipe Paleo or refined sugar-free
If you want to make this recipe Paleo or totally natural, you can also use maple sugar! (We buy this one for the best price and product.)
The recipe will turn out darker than with cane sugar, but maple sugar is still light enough to turn a really pretty color of earthy pink, when beet powder is added!
For this variation, I give only one recipe (see the Notes section of the recipe card), whereas, as you’ll see below in the main recipe, I provide 5 shades of pink.
How to make 5 shades of Pink Sugar with Beet Powder
Below I share the recipe ratios, providing a spectrum of pink color, so you can choose the shade you want:
- LIGHTEST Color Pink: 1 Tablespoon sugar + 1/16 teaspoon beet powder (Find a 1/16th teaspoon here.)
- 2ND LIGHTEST Pink: 1 Tablespoon sugar + 1/8 teaspoon beet powder
- MEDIUM Pink Color: 1 Tablespoon sugar + 1/4 teaspoon beet powder
- MEDIUM-Dark Pink: 1 Tablespoon sugar + 1/4 and 1/8 teaspoon beet powder
- DARKEST Shade of Pink: 1 Tablespoon sugar + 1/2 teaspoon beet powder
I’ve used 1 Tablespoon of cane sugar with the beet powder. To make more colored sugar, simply double, triple or quadruple your batch.
Each measurement listed yields 1 Tablespoon of pink sugar. (I found I didn’t need very much colored sugar for a batch of cookies or the top of a cake. But, it was also really easy to double the recipe for a batch of cupcakes.)
How to mix beet sugar into cane sugar
To make pink sugar:
- Measure sugar into mason jar, or glass. Add beet powder.
- Use fork to stir beet powder into sugar, well. This only takes a minute. It mixes in really easily!
That’s it! Your Natural Pink Sugar is ready to use!
Much less expensive and healthier than sprinkles, and so pretty, enjoy using Natural Pink Sugar for all your pink decorating needs!
