Oatmeal Banana Berry Smoothie with no added sweetener is a wonderful meal replacement — with fiber, protein, carbs, vitamins and minerals. Or, enjoy it alongside a healthy protein! This delicious breakfast or hearty snack provides macronutrients, and it’s satisfying.
What surprised me the most when I first made this recipe was: just how GOOD it tastes, with no added sweetener.
Use gluten-free oats, for a Gluten-free diet. This recipe is also Anti-Inflammatory, VAD and Vegan.
Ingredients in Oatmeal Banana Berry Smoothie
Just six simple ingredients create the most nutritious and satisfying smoothie, without any added sweetener:
- rolled oats
- banana, frozen or fresh — depending on what texture and temperature you prefer your smoothie. Most people prefer frozen.
- ice cubes
- blueberries and chopped strawberries (chop only if they’re frozen), fresh or frozen — I use fresh in the summer. Even though the smoothie isn’t quite as slushy made with fresh fruit, it’s actually easier to digest when less cold. So that’s the bonus of using party fresh over all frozen fruit.
- oat milk, or preferred milk of choice (you can also use kefir)
Why add, + the benefit of adding, oats to smoothies
The first ingredient in this smoothie is oatmeal.
I now ask myself, ‘Why haven’t I been adding oatmeal to smoothies all along?’
Oats in smoothies:
- add fiber — Fiber helps the body to detox. It binds to toxins, and adds weight to stool, also helping to prevent constipation when eaten in the right amounts.
- provide Vitamin B1 — which is great for energy and preventing one of many health issues you can read about here (Thiamine deficiency is common.)
- create a creamy texture
- provide satiety — Some smoothies just make us feel full, but not satisfied. Adding oatmeal provides fiber and nutrition, and the feeling of being done and satisfied.
- maintain a moderate oxalate diet — For those sensitive to oxalates, it’s important not to remove them completely. A moderate amount of oxalates in our diet helps the body to maintain the unique flora that digest oxalates, and we want that microbiome diversity.
How to make Oatmeal Banana Berry Smoothie
This one’s so easy: Just toss all of the ingredients in the blender, and purée until smooth.
I like to add the oats, frozen banana and ice first, so they’re close to the blade, as they need the most pulverizing. Add the liquid last.
That’s it: blend, and enjoy!
Notes on how slushy and thick you like your smoothie
Most people like their smoothies slushy: like a healthy milkshake, with smooth ice crystals.
I like this, too!
But, I personally think this smoothie is better just cool, not frozen slushy-style.
You have two options: Make the recipe as-is, so it’s cool, satisfying and refreshing.
Or, if you want yours to be thicker and slushier, see the notes in the Recipe: Reduce the liquid as noted, and make sure all your fruit is frozen.
Oatmeal Banana Berry Smoothie (no added sweetener)
Equipment
Ingredients
- ½ cup rolled oats
- 1 banana frozen
- 3 ice cubes
- ¾ cup blueberries and strawberries (¾ cup total of both fruits combined), fresh or frozen (chop strawberries only if they're frozen); be sure to use all frozen berries for a thicker, slushier smoothie.
- 1-¾ cup oat milk or preferred milk of choice (you can also use kefir); use only 1-¼ to 1-½ cups milk for a thicker, slushier smoothie.
Instructions
- Place ingredients into blender in the order they're listed: oats, banana, ice cubes, berries, then oat milk.
- Start blending at slower speed, then increase as the harder items are processed. Increase speed, and blend until smooth, 45 to 60 seconds. Serve!
Notes
Optional add-ins
Two add-ins may be helpful for your healthy diet and lifestyle:- collagen -- While collagen isn't a complete protein, it does provide needed "non-essential" amino acids that help increase one's overall protein intake daily.
- For the best 3rd party tested pesticide-free collagen, use discount code "BEAUTIFUL10" here for 10% off your entire order at checkout.
- electrolyte powder (find it here) -- Almost everyone needs more potassium in their diet. This essential mineral helps with energy, motility, sleep and more. Adding electrolytes to smoothies is a great way to encourage good heart, muscle and nerve health -- and increase energy levels.

I eat oatmeal almost every single morning but wanted to switch it up in the summer and came across this smoothie. It was so good and perfectly sweet with just the berries!
Megan says
YAY!, Veronika, you made my day lol. I feel the same way. This treat is so healthy and such a nice variation but still gives us that fabulous high fiber oatmeal. 🙂 Cheers and blessings!
Ginny says
On a low vitamin A diet, and for someone that possibly has thyroid problems and significant hair loss, do you think taking one scoop of Perfect Supplements collagen on a daily basis to squeeze in more protein is harmful?
Megan says
Hi Ginny, thanks for the good question. Dr. Smith does sometimes encourage private patients to use collagen, but he doesn’t go on about the benefits broadly — more as you intend: To increase protein when that’s needed. He prefers meat sources, but sometimes it’s a good option. If you don’t have any negative reactions, it’s probably fine, and certainly good to add in more protein. He even had me do it. 🙂 No, not likely harmful unless your body gives you a clue that it’s not working. Blessings on your process and continuing to improve!
