Studies show a connection between many toxic metals and common health conditions. Maybe you’re wondering: Do I have a heavy metal toxicity that I need to address?
This article is not exhaustive. Many conditions are influenced by toxic metals, even if they are not the sole cause, and I can’t include them all. But it begins to show how often toxic metals are linked to disease.
Want to get well? I am living proof that detoxing heavy metals can be a key part of that journey.
I’m sorry to say it, but these days, most of us carry toxic metals that burden our health. In this article, I share studies linking specific metals to specific symptoms and conditions.
Which diseases are linked to toxic metals
Heavy metals are increasingly being studied in connection with many modern chronic diseases, especially neurological disorders, cancer and inflammatory conditions. While many researchers do not claim that metals are the sole cause of these diseases, some have concluded that certain symptoms or conditions may be caused primarily by toxic metals. Studies suggest heavy toxic metals contribute through oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, endocrine disruption, malformed proteins and what they like to call “impaired cellular signaling”.H. pylori
One example of a metal that’s clearly linked to disease symptoms is nickel and Helicobacter pylori — the bacterium linked with gastritis, ulcers, GERD, acid reflux, chronic coughing, indigestion and stomach cancer. Research confirms that H. pylori has an absolute requirement for nickel in order to survive in the acidic environment of the stomach. Nickel-dependent enzymes allow the organism to colonize gastric tissue and persist despite harsh stomach acid. The bacterium’s dependence on nickel has even led researchers to investigate nickel restriction strategies. Many testimonies exist of people who go on a low nickel diet, and all these symptoms associated with H. pylori go away! (Reach out to me if you’d like help starting a low nickel diet to overcome your symptoms.)Autism
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has also been widely studied in relation to toxic metal exposure. Metals most commonly associated in the literature include mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, aluminum and excess copper. Several reviews have found significantly higher levels of certain toxic metals in ASD populations compared with controls. Researchers propose mechanisms including neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and disruption of normal brain development.Parkinson’s disease
Neurodegenerative diseases are another major focus of metal research. Parkinson’s disease has been repeatedly linked with manganese exposure, especially occupational exposure. Review articles describe how excess manganese accumulates in regions of the brain involved in movement control, producing symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease. Other metals studied in Parkinson’s disease include iron, copper, mercury and lead.Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease has likewise been associated with multiple metals, including aluminum, copper, iron, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and manganese. Researchers investigated how these metals may contribute to amyloid plaque formation, tau pathology (a protein that gets damaged and disrupts normal brain cell function), oxidative stress and neuronal degeneration. Copper dysregulation in particular has received substantial attention because of copper’s ability to influence oxidative injury and amyloid aggregation in the brain.Cancer
Cancer biology also demonstrates strong connections with trace metals. Elevated copper levels are frequently observed inside tumors, where copper appears to support angiogenesis (excessive new blood vessels), mitochondrial metabolism and rapid cellular growth. Nickel, cadmium, chromium and arsenic have also been studied extensively for carcinogenic properties. Some studies examining tumor tissue have identified altered concentrations of copper, nickel and other trace metals inside cancerous tissue compared with normal tissue. Thyroid tumors, prostate cancer and other malignancies have all been investigated in relation to abnormal metal accumulation.Seizures
Mercury’s effects on the brain and seizures is well documented. Patients or animals with acute or chronic methylmercury poisoning often display epileptic seizures or increased susceptibility to seizures. Nickel and lead have also been implicated with seizures in case reports and experiments. Mercury, nickel and lead continue to be investigated due to their effects on brain excitability and seizure thresholds.Autoimmune, chronic inflammation and more
Beyond these diseases, heavy toxic metals are increasingly discussed in the broader context of chronic inflammation, autoimmune disease, metabolic dysfunction and neurodegeneration. Researchers commonly describe shared mechanisms including oxidative stress, mitochondrial impairment, inflammatory cytokine activation and disruption of mineral homeostasis. Although many questions remain unresolved, the scientific literature increasingly suggests that environmental and dietary exposure to toxic metals — combined with deficiencies of protective minerals — play an important role in the development or progression of many common modern diseases.Solutions
Take zeolite. It’s highly effective at trapping lead, cadmium, nickel, copper and mercury. Take modified citrus pectin (mentioned below as Pectasol and Pectaclear); it’s highly effective at grabbing hold of nickel. Address both metal toxicity and liver health by doing a low nickel diet that’s also low copper and low vitamin A. Reduce both arsenic and manganese with dietary choices. Consider all of the following binders to protect yourself from toxic metals as they detox: activated charcoal, zeolite, Pectasol and Pectaclear — to absorb the poisons being released — both in your blood and GI tract. Watch for my upcoming article on which supplements to take during a Low Nickel Diet — to overcome deficiencies and aid in the detox of toxicities. Di says
Does chlorella get rid of toxic metals besides what other remedies you recommended. I take no wall chlorella regularly. Can the detoxification of metals disbursement of heavy metals show up as tumors?
Megan says
Hi Di, I’m afraid chlorella is not as good as proponents say it is. Firstly, chlorella is very high in vitamin A so causes new toxicity or adds to existing toxicity. Secondly, I am friends with a biological dentist, and while he and his peers used chlorella for years to try and help patients detox heavy metals from fillings, in reality, it just isn’t working (partially because patients don’t get well when you add to their toxicity?). He gave up on chlorella and now uses binders like zeolite and activated charcoal, plus Pectasol or Pectaclear. The mystery of tumors needs more research. We can only speculate on the processes and formation of tumors. The key is to use binders to grab as you detox to prevent new damage.

Interested in heavy metals toxicity. Please send information.
Megan says
Hi Linda, You can read any of the articles I’ve written on copper or zeolite. Just use the search bar at the top, and type in “Copper” or “zeolite”. Beyond that, you can type into any search engine “Pub Med studies” and the metal you’re interested in from this article. This post can be a jumping off point for more of your own research.
A says
Hi Megan, what solutions do you like for chronic constipation that worsens with heavy metal detox, resulting in a painful and unending detox cycle?
Thank you.
Megan says
Hi A, good question. Are you able to eat two apples a day and use apple pectin? They’re both gentle and effective. What kind of pain are you experiencing; where is it located? Happy to help … Also, are you already using Magnesium Malate? or CALM Mg? Are you taking zeolite?
