When searching for home and body products, it’s often hard to know which ones are not only safe and eco-friendly, but also effective. It’s costly to try out several brands and takes time to research. In this post, I share the most effective natural products for home and body that I use myself. I hope it’s helpful!
If you’ve been looking for a better deodorant for years, for example, or the best toilet cleaner, this articles shares what I’ve found for our family … These are not DIY recipes. This articles shares the products we buy for cleaning and self care.
Most of them are unscented and keep in mind those with chemical sensitivities.

Body care products
Most effective deodorant
Hands down, we LOVE this product, for being very effective at preventing or negating odor naturally and having clean ingredients. All of my sweaty athletic men use this, and I use it, too.
Best shampoo and conditioner
I searched for years, and even tried custom expensive products, before finding this very affordable gentle shampoo and conditioner. I have long straight hair, and these products always keeps both my hair and my scalp healthy, with the perfect pH. Not only are these products natural and affordable, they last a really long time:
Most effective body soap that’s naturally anti-bacterial
This soap is the only one that works well for my husband, and we’ve tried many over the years. It cuts through body odor, kills bacteria naturally, and it’s gentle on the skin. I’ve heard similar testimonies from others — that they need a soap that works but that’s also gentle. We buy this Tea Tree version on purpose, for those functions. Buying the product in bulk gives you the best price.
Safest, and most effective, sunscreens
After a lot of research, we landed on these best (reef-safe) sunscreens:
- for adults and kids
- just kids
- and babies.
Best dental floss
I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about this dental floss recommendation. It’s made with bamboo and charcoal, has perfect functionality, and the company even uses natural packaging. Sold in 3-packs.
Toothpaste
We don’t actually use toothpaste. We use this remineralizing liquid combined with: Vitamin K drops, vitamin D from sun or light exposure (not pills), plus food-sourced calcium, zinc and magnesium supplementation.
Here’s an article about toothpaste alternatives.
Body lotion and face cream
My favorite face cream combines the best magnesium lotion with castor oil — 50:50 ratio. I put a spot of each in my palm, rub my hands together briefly, and then smooth over my face. It’s wonderful, and I’ve been using this duo for years. My skin stays more supple (than with other approaches or products) and maintains the right amount of moisture all day, or all night.
For body lotion, I use half castor oil plus half pale jojoba oil, for the right thickness and ability to rub it in. They absorb beautifully without feeling greasy. If you want a more lotion-like feel, use either oil above at a 50:50 ratio with this basic magnesium lotion.
Hand cream
Found more recently, I use this unscented and gentle product mostly when I travel — because being in lots of public places and using harsh soaps creates dry hands. Otherwise, at home, I don’t need hand lotion. (If I rarely do, I use the same combination I use for my face or body.)
Lip smacker
I also no longer need lip balm when I am home. But when we travel, I occasionally like to use it. And this one is good and natural, plus helpful.
Make-up
Personally, I just use eyeliner and mascara. I really like Thrive brand for both of these. If you use this link, you’ll get 20% off your first order if you enter your email. (Just unsubscribe if you don’t want their newsletter.) I chose these two products from Thrive because of their ingredients, and because I needed a natural make-up that didn’t smudge or come off during the day. I’ve been happier with this brand’s products than any other brands’ I’ve tried.
Make-up remover
I use castor oil and organic cotton to take my make-up off at night. You can also use a natural microfiber cloth with hot water and the oil. (I find that castor oil works better with mascara than other oils.)
Women’s razor
For shaving, it’s important to have a nickel-free blade, as well as great overall functionality, causing no irritation. This newer and popular brand indeed delivers on these important specs.
Shaving cream for men or women
For men or women, you only need a very small amount of this Clean Shave Cream, and then add hot water, and rub in: It spreads out, and it works so well.
Good clean ingredients, and I specifically like the form of Vitamin E they use in this product, because it’s less bioavailable to the body, which is a good thing (because too much Vitamin E is not good, but most products use it as a natural preservative).
Dry shampoo (for styling)
If you need dry shampoo for the days you can’t wash, or you want it for styling, here’s the one we use. My teenage son uses this product daily for styling his fine straight hair, but it works well for curly hair, too. I tried many brands for him before landing on this one, so I’m happy to attest to the quality and value of this product. It works, and you don’t need very much.
Natural House Cleaning Products
Best dish soap
This brand and product really does work best, and lasts the longest, while being made with natural ingredients. I always choose unscented, and the bulk product saves a lot of money.
Here’s their refill, to save on plastic when refilling.
And here’s their Dishwasher Detergent.
Best laundry detergent
After decades of trying different laundry detergents, we’re so happy to have found and moved to this brand of liquidless eco-sheets! This brand actually whitens our whites better than all the natural liquid soaps we’ve used over the years, and there’s no plastic packaging! Super easy and convenient, we’ve made the switch I wanted to make for years.
Best gentle abrasive cleaner
Nothing beats Bon Ami for being a gentle abrasive cleaner. It’s downright cheap, fully natural, and it does a great job. I like this product most of all for scrubbing out my kitchen sink, and the bathroom sinks. But it works on tubs, toilets and countertops, too.
Countertops
For effectiveness and the least smell, this product works best — for both kitchen and bathroom. We’ve tried other companies, and even the unscented natural products do actually have an unpleasant smell, and they leave more airborne particulate that’s doesn’t feel healthy to breathe.
Toilet bowl cleaner
Seventh Generation products do indeed work better than some of their competitors’, and this mint toilet bowl cleaner is no exception. While you can use Bon Ami to save money, it does require a little more elbow grease than using this product.
Window cleaner
Easy spray and clean with no streaking and the least smell, we like this product. Pair with these natural microfiber cleaning cloths.
Best All Purpose + mopping
For mopping, laundry, stains, counter tops and even dishes, this product is pretty amazing, and it lasts forever. It’s a big bulk bottle, so you have to pay up front, but then it works so well, and you only need a tiny bit: Dilute according to the directions.
Just stains
Spray directly on clothing stains, add a little water, and scrub together the spot a bit to loosen the stain, then wash as usual. This product works well.
For blood or protein stains, use hydrogen peroxide.
