In this post, Must Haves for Bug Bites and Stings, we look at THE best (most effective!) natural remedies for bites and stings. You can create a mini summer first aid kit for camping trips, hikes or nights by a campfire when the bites inevitably happen.
This post is a special gift for anyone who has mild or more severe histamine reactions to bites and stings. My son and I both used to get big reactions, so it’s a boon to have remedies that really relieve swelling and itching.
Bites and stings include: mosquito bites, ant bites, tick bites, bee, wasp or yellow jacket stings and any other insect bites or stings you can think of!

Must Haves for Bug Bites and Stings
Here are the five most effective remedies for various bug bites and stings.
1. Boiron’s Ledum pelustre homeopathic (find it here)
Reducing itching within minutes — from mosquito bites to chigger bites — this remedy is even effective after a tick bite.

2. Badger Itch Relief (find it here)
This balm works fast to stop itching. I like to use two applications: Put it on, wait a minute, and then put on one more layer.
The best topical relief you can buy when you combine it with the above homeopathic (Ledum pelustre). I find the combo takes away all itching.

3. That Bugbite Thing (find it here)
Removes the venom from a sting or bite, reduces itching significantly or completely. Works really well for mosquito bites and ant bites specifically.

4. TRS spray to remove the toxins, reduce swelling and accelerate healing
This product is especially comforting and powerful when you get stung by a bee, wasp, hornet or yellow jacket, or if you’re someone who swells up in general from stings and bites. It reduces swelling and pain overnight by about 90% in each of our experiences with it.
Simply spray on, pat it a little to cover the skin; then cover with a band-aid. Watch the swelling disappear overnight!
TRS requires a distributor link to purchase. Here’s mine. Click the Shop Now button. The product is called Advanced TRS. (I buy the 3-pack in glass bottles to save money. This product is also excellent used orally for clearing heavy metals from the brain and body.)

5. Boiron’s Histaminum hydrochloricum homeopathic (find it here)
Similarly, if you have histamine reactions to bites and stings, this homeopathic is excellent at reducing the histamine flare. It works to reduce or prevent a reaction, or reduce a reaction that’s already happening. (Even helps with allergies.)
We have used this homeopathic for years and even given it away to friends. It’s just something everyone should have who has allergies or reacts to bites and stings.

What’s the best bug repellent??
I know some of you are wondering about prevention! So what’s the best natural bug repellent?
THIS ONE! We used to live in a swampy area that was filled with mosquitos, and this product works! You can read the reviews of others, too. It’s a little sticky and smelly, but it smells natural (lemon eucalyptus), and I find the effectiveness to be well worth it.

Cistus tea is very effective for preventing disease from insect bites. Pine tar soap also is very effective from the bite of several critters.

Thanks, Bear! I appreciate you sharing! Wonderful insights. Cistus tea comes from the rock rose plant, which is one of my favorites. We have it in our garden and get bright pink crepe-like flowers each spring/early summer. Here are those products: Cistus tea — https://amzn.to/448Rxlv and Pine tar soap — https://amzn.to/4npce42 The ingredients in the soap brand I link to are really good and clean.

This is timely as I was scratching my thigh this morning, then realized Iโd been bitten by something. I used Ledum and a salve we have called Green Goo, in the first aid variety. I think there may be a variety as well thatโs specifically for itching. Iโll look into possibly getting one of the ones you mentioned, I think Apis is good for stings and maybe bites as well?
Megan says
I haven’t used Apis, but thanks for sharing, Dorothy! Yes, it’s definitely the season!

Youโre welcome. It certainly is. I. read recently that a couple of drops of rose Geranium oil on the skin and/or clothing can help deter some bugs, mainly , I believe.

Good to know!

I eat garlic every day; it seems to help keeps mosquitoes and ticks from biting. My wife will have them attacking and biting – they will hover on me but almost always pick elsewhere. Chiggers still a challenge if I am doing heavy gardening with lots of overgrown weed removal.

Hi Mark, I hope you have the time and are interested to watch this good video on garlic: https://www.youtube.com/live/Ajoyq-LIhJk?si=WLSzHDcj4mwBlOVa Blessings!
