Equipment

  • bowl and spoon/fork
  • blender, food processor, spice/coffee grinder or hand blender: not essential but ideal to have one of these

Ingredients

  • 1 10-ounce bag (about 2 cups) frozen raspberries or blackberries fully defrosted with all their juices (To make this recipe with fresh berries, see the Recipe Notes below.)
  • 1/4 cup basil seeds
  • 3 Tablespoons liquid sweetener of choice maple syrup, honey or agave; for Keto and Low Carb, use liquid allulose or similar
  • 1 Tablespoon lime juice fresh, or lemon juice

Instructions

  • Blended recipe option: Combine all ingredients in a bowl, and stir well. Allow to thicken for 15 to 30 minutes. Blend all or half of the recipe. You can use a blender, food processor, hand blender or even a good quality electric spice/coffee grinder. Blend briefly, about 10 to 15 seconds. Transfer to storage jar or serve.

  • Variation that doesn't blend the jam: *Blend 1 to 2 Tablespoons of the dry basil seeds in an electric spice/coffee grinder (or mortar & pestle) until they become meal, about 15 seconds. Combine all ingredients in a bowl, and stir well, including the basil seed meal. Allow to thicken 15 to 30 minutes. Serve or store. (*Note: you don't have to blend any of the seeds into meal if you don't want to.)

Notes

How to make Basil Seed Jam with fresh berries

The recipe is the same with fresh berries, but the order of Instructions is different. We first blend the berries and other ingredients, so juices are produced, and then allow the jam to thicken.
  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl, and stir well.
  • Blend all or half of the recipe. You can use a blender, food processor, hand blender (or even a good quality electric spice/coffee grinder in batches). (Or, if you don't have a blender, you can smash the berries with a potato masher or similar, and then stir the ingredients again.) Blend briefly, about 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Allow to thicken for 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Transfer to storage jar or serve.
