I counsel clients about how to create useful and decidedly good recipes while on healing diets, so their new dietary lifestyles feel easier.  In the process of sharing food, I often share my experiences with healing techniques, because diet alone is not usually enough to bring complete healing.  I am passionate about a handful of remedies, the ones that have helped our family.

Today I’m going to share the remedy that brought me back from extreme adrenal fatigue, a.k.a. wanting to take a nap all the time!  It is called grounding or earthing.

I often marvel how energized I feel whenever I go to the beach.  So alive.

The sand, the grasses, the dirt, the sea, all of nature is charged with energy.  Animals, bugs, humans, even bacteria, are charged with this current.

But modern humans have become detached from this surging energy: removed by the shoes we wear, the beds we sleep on, the fact that we drive in cars everywhere, instead of walking, and the raised up houses we live in.  (Have you heard of the eco-friendly dirt floors now available from “green” contractors? Cool option!)

We have, once again, modernized and in doing so minimized our exposure to nature’s bounty all in one fell swoop.  We think we’re improving our lives or making them more convenient; but in reality we’re leaving something essential by the wayside.

Going barefoot, sleeping on the earth, being out in nature, touching nature, they’re too often things of the past.  These staples of emotional and mental health have an actual physical effect on us that we must reclaim.

Although not all people groups of the past understood the benefits of being in contact with the earth, we must be motivated by this knowledge now, the necessity of re-connecting.

Dr. Mercola says,

Research indicates that electrons from the Earth have antioxidant effects that can protect your body from inflammation and its many well-documented health consequences…

It is known that the Earth maintains a negative electrical potential on its surface. When you are in direct contact with the ground (walking, sitting, or laying down on the earth’s surface) the earth’s electrons are conducted to your body, bringing it to the same electrical potential as the earth. Living in direct contact with the earth grounds your body, inducing favorable physiological and electrophysiological changes that promote optimum health…

biomodulatorMy doctor in Vancouver, WA, the one who healed my daughter of asthma, hooked me up, during our second appointment, to an electricity-generating contraption called a Tennant Biomodulator, which transmits many different frequencies found in nature.  The 30 minute session had such a profound effect on my energy levels that I began receiving weekly treatments.  Over the course of a month my organ functions improved by 50%!  (He said I was like a dead battery before we started.)

In between the treatments with my doc’s contraption, I was told to make contact with the earth directly, and other living things, on a daily basis, via barefoot walks, swims in our local rivers and snuggling with my kids.  The outdoor activities were wonderful in warm weather.  We found an incredible swimming hole on the McKenzie River and I loved having an excuse to go barefoot, what a freeing way to go!

When the weather turned colder, I found by accident one rainy day, that wet grass had a more powerful effect on me than walking on dry earth.  The first cold day I tried it, I went from grumpy, sleepy and droopy to feeling ready for the second half of a home school day!  The water droplets also hold electricity in them!

Because I’m exposed to EMF’s so often with my computer-oriented career, I decided it was time to get a grounding mat to counter-act the effects.  I also got a grounding sheet to sleep on.  Both of these have long wires that reach to nearby windows and then grounding stakes that get anchored into the earth.  Alternately, if your electrical outlets themselves are grounded, the wires have a plug that can simply be placed in the outlet.

At night I unplug our internet and sleep on the grounding sheet.  During the day, I go for a walk on wet grass (oh, lovely Autumn, you ask so little and give so much!); and I connect myself during computer work to the grounding mat, where my feet rest.

Next up, I’m super excited to buy these moccasins!! Yes, you can get grounding through certain kinds of shoes.

On a daily basis we need to get back in contact with the earth: get grounded.

What methods of grounding are the most realistic and convenient for you?  Do you think you’ll give it a try?

(The most surprising thing that happened to my husband and I while first sleeping on our grounding sheet was we each had 2-3 nights of very strange dreams! I think it was us getting such deep, quality sleep for the first time in a long time!)

Let’s face it: healing from Adrenal Fatigue is a tricky business.  The thyroid and adrenal glands are closely linked and hard to put back into balance and full throttle.

There is one more piece of the puzzle that has been HUGE in restoring a great night’s sleep to me: animal-sourced adrenal extract.  Lots of helpful practitioners recommend herbs to help support the adrenals.  But because I’m a BAD case, my body is like a petri dish that does a great job at telling me what’s effective.  While herbs do support the adrenals but they do not always provide dramatic healing.

To read more about animal-sourced adrenal healing, read my article How to Beat Insomnia.  I can testify that I sleep well now, really well.
